What Is the CPS Classical School Exam?
The CPS Classical Exam is the admissions assessment used for Chicago Public Schools Classical programs. It measures academic achievement in two areas: Reading and Math. CPS reports a standard score and a percentile rank for each subject.
The Classical Exam is not the same as the Regional Gifted Center exam. The Classical Exam focuses on a student’s current academic achievement, while the Regional Gifted Center exam focuses on reasoning skills, including abstract thinking and solving problems with new information.
Is a Classical School the Same as a Regional Gifted Center?
No. Both are CPS Selective Enrollment Elementary School programs, but the curriculum and admissions tests are different. Families may apply to both program types. Kindergarten applicants complete the Classical and Regional Gifted tests in one testing session. Applicants to grades 1-8 schedule the two exams as separate events.

Important: Families must schedule the exam and submit the application by the application deadline, but the testing appointment itself may occur after the deadline. Available appointments in the portal are the controlling schedule.
Why the CPS Classical Exam Matters
The Classical Exam determines a student’s admissions point total for Classical programs. The test is worth up to 300 points, with up to 150 points available in Reading and 150 points in Math. Unlike Academic Center admissions, classroom grades do not add points to the Classical admissions total. For students applying to grades 5-8, grades are used only to determine whether the student meets the 3.0 GPA testing requirement.
Students must also reach at least the median in each subject. A high score in one section does not compensate for a below-median score in the other. Because seats are limited and admissions results vary by school, grade, tier, and year, families should focus on balanced performance rather than a single overall target.
A Classical School can give students access to accelerated instruction and a challenging academic community. At the same time, the best school is the one that fits the child’s academic, social, logistical, and developmental needs. Test results are one admissions measure, not a complete measure of a child’s ability or potential.
Who Takes the CPS Classical Exam?
The exam is for students applying through GoCPS to a CPS Classical program in kindergarten through eighth grade. That includes current CPS, charter, private, Catholic, homeschool, and other non-CPS students who meet the applicable requirements.
- Students applying to grades K-4 do not need to meet a GPA threshold before testing, although normal age and grade requirements still apply.
- Students applying to grades 5-8 need a minimum 3.0 GPA from the prior school year across Reading, Math, Science, and Social Science.
- Current CPS students generally have grades synced to GoCPS. Non-CPS families may need to upload an official transcript.
- Students with an IEP must meet the same GPA minimum, and eligible accommodations in a current IEP or 504 Plan can be provided.

CPS Classical Exam Format, Sections, and Testing Logistics
The experience differs by the grade to which the student is applying.
Applying to Kindergarten
- Testing is administered one-on-one with an examiner.
- The session is untimed.
- If the family applies to both Classical and Regional Gifted Center programs, both assessments are administered during one testing session.
- Children must be able to separate from the parent or guardian and walk with the examiner to the testing room. Parents cannot accompany children into the assessment area.
Applying to Grades 1-8
- Students complete a paper-and-pencil exam in a group setting with a proctor.
- The Classical and Regional Gifted exams are separate appointments when a student applies to both program types.
- CPS’s currently posted testing guide lists the Classical Exam at approximately 1.5 to 1.75 hours.
- Testing typically occurs on weekends beginning in late October or early November, although some grades or program types may begin in December.
Test-Day Logistics
- Testing for Classical programs is conducted at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The test ticket provides the exact building and address.
- CPS emails the primary guardian a test ticket approximately one to two weeks before the appointment. Families should also confirm the date, time, and location in the portal.
- Applicants to grades 2-8 should bring two sharpened No. 2 pencils. CPS provides pencils to younger applicants.
- Calculators, phones, smart watches, and other personal electronics are prohibited in the testing room.
- Missed appointments are not automatically rescheduled, and make-up availability is limited. CPS allows no exam retakes after a student has been exposed to the test for that admissions cycle.
What the CPS Classical Exam Actually Tests
CPS publicly describes the Classical Exam as an academic achievement test in Reading and Math. Decatur Classical School further describes it as evaluating reading comprehension and fluency along with math problem solving, reasoning, and understanding of patterns.
Reading
Preparation should strengthen the student’s ability to understand age-appropriate language and text, read accurately at the expected developmental level, identify important information, make reasonable inferences, and explain meaning. The balance between oral directions, early literacy, fluency, vocabulary, and passage comprehension will naturally differ by grade.
Math
Preparation should strengthen age-appropriate number sense, computation, mathematical language, patterns, and problem solving. Students should learn to represent what a problem is asking, choose a sound approach, work accurately, and check their reasoning.

How the CPS Classical Exam Is Scored
Classical School admissions use a 300-point system based entirely on the admissions exam. Reading is worth up to 150 points, and Math is worth up to 150 points. CPS reports both standard scores and percentile ranks, but the point conversion differs by grade band.

To remain eligible for a Classical offer or waitlist, the student must earn at least 75 admissions points in Reading and at least 75 admissions points in Math. CPS describes this as scoring at or above the median in both subjects. A student below the threshold in either section is not eligible for a Classical offer or waitlist for that cycle.
How Seats Are Assigned
At the entry grade, kindergarten, the first 30 percent of available seats are offered to the highest point totals regardless of tier. The remaining 70 percent are distributed equally among the four socioeconomic tiers, with applicants ranked by points within their assigned tier. Tier is considered only at the entry grade. For later grades, selection depends on point order and the limited seats available.
If applicants have the same total, the kindergarten Classical tiebreaker is the Math standard score, followed by a computerized lottery if needed. For grades 1-8, the order is Math standard score, Reading standard score, and then lottery.

How to Register for the CPS Classical Exam
- Create or access the family’s GoCPS account. You will need the student’s name, date of birth, and CPS ID when applicable.
- Explore Classical programs and confirm the grade to which the child is applying. A student can test for only one grade level in an application cycle.
- Add the Classical programs the family would genuinely accept to the GoCPS application.
- For applicants to grades 5-8, verify the prior year’s final grades in Reading, Math, Science, and Social Science. Non-CPS applicants may need to upload an official transcript.
- Schedule the Classical Exam inside the application when prompted. Available dates and locations shown in the portal are the current options.
- Submit the application within one hour after scheduling. CPS automatically deletes the test event if the application is not submitted within that hour.
- Rank programs in the family’s true order of preference. Ranking a desired school lower does not improve the odds of admission elsewhere.
- Before test day, confirm the appointment in the portal and review the emailed test ticket. Results are posted in GoCPS when initial elementary offers are released.
Why Start Preparing Early?
Early preparation gives families enough time to identify genuine skill gaps, strengthen Reading and Math gradually, and make practice feel familiar rather than stressful. It also leaves room to adjust the plan as the student improves.
For younger children, preparation should remain brief, positive, and developmentally appropriate. Comfort following directions, working independently with an unfamiliar adult, and separating from a parent may matter as much to the test-day experience as completing another worksheet. For older students, preparation can include longer paper-and-pencil practice, pacing, and structured error review.
Families should also register early. Test sessions fill on a first-come, first-served basis, and CPS says make-up opportunities are extremely limited and cannot be guaranteed.
