Mean, Median and Mode

Mean, Median and Mode are just a number that represents a set of data. In other words, they are three kinds of averages and also the three most important averages when you start learning statistics.

Mean 🡪 Is your common average number. It is just like finding your average number, where you add all the numbers and divide it by the count of the numbers.

Median 🡪 And median is nothing but the middle value of a set of numbers, but remember you need to list the number from smallest to the largest and find the middle value in that list.

Mode 🡪 Is the most occurring or repeated number in a set of numbers. If the set of numbers has no repeated numbers, then you don’t have a mode there.

In simple words:

Mean – Average Value
Median – Middle Value
Mode – Most Occurring Value.

How to Calculate Mean

Calculate the Mean from the following set of numbers:

5, 8, 12, 18, 22

To calculate the Mean value, first you need to sum up all the numbers:

5 + 8 + 12 + 18 + 22 = 65

Now to calculate the Mean or average value, divide the sum by the count of numbers. Here the set contains 5 numbers so,

65 / 5 = 13

13 is your Mean value.

Remember unlike Median and Mode, the Mean value is not present in the set of numbers provided, but just an average value of the set of numbers provided.

How to Calculate Median

Calculate the Median from the following set of numbers:

12,5, 23, 11, 30

To calculate the median, we need to first arrange the numbers in order from smallest to largest:

5, 11, 12, 23, 30

We saw earlier that the median is the middle value

So, the median here is 12 which is the middle value of these set of numbers.

Calculate the Median from the following set of numbers:

10, 60, 40, 20

To calculate the median, we need to first arrange the numbers in order from smallest to largest:

10, 20, 40, 60

But if there is an even number of data points or if there are 4 numbers out of which to calculate the middle value, we need to calculate the average of the two middle values. 20 and 40 are the two middle values here:

Median = 20 + 40 / 2 = 60 / 2 = 30

So, the median here is 30.

How to Calculate Mode

Calculate the Mode from the following set of numbers:

12,5, 23, 11, 30, 11

Mode is nothing but the number that occurs most often.
Here 11 appears twice and hence the Mode is 11.

Calculate the Mode from the following set of numbers:

12, 5, 23, 11, 30

Here we can see there is no number repeated, hence there is no mode in this set of numbers.

Calculate the Mode from the following set of numbers:

12, 5, 23, 11, 30, 11, 5

Here you can see that there are two numbers being repeated, hence the mode is 5 and 12.
